Agentic Zia for Zoho People: When AI Actually Does the HR Work

There's a meaningful difference between AI that suggests and AI that does. In June 2026, Zoho crossed that line for HR. Zia in Zoho People became agentic, meaning it doesn't just answer questions, it carries out multi-step HR tasks on its own. Here's what it can actually do, and the honest guardrails you should keep in mind.

From assistant to agent
The old Zia could summarise a policy or answer a question. The rebuilt, agentic Zia goes further. According to Zoho's 2026 release notes, it can file a leave request directly from an uploaded medical certificate, reading the document, extracting the dates, and creating the request. It can surface attrition signals by spotting patterns in absenteeism and login behaviour that a human reviewing records manually would likely miss. And it can return skills-search results in natural language, so you can ask who on the team has a particular skill and get a real answer.
It works across Zoho People on the web, in Slack, in Microsoft Teams, and on mobile. And like the rest of Zoho's 2026 AI, it supports BYOK, bring your own key, so you can point Zia at Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini alongside Zoho's own hosted model.

Why this is a genuine step forward
HR runs on repetitive, document-heavy, judgement-light tasks: logging leave, chasing approvals, answering the same policy questions. That's exactly the kind of work an agent handles well. Freeing your HR team from it is a real gain, not a gimmick, especially for a team managing 50 to 500 people where the admin volume is high but a full HR-ops department isn't justified.
The attrition-signal capability is the one we'd watch most closely. Spotting quietly disengaging employees early, from real behavioural data, is genuinely valuable if it's set up thoughtfully.

The honest guardrails
Here's where we'd urge caution, and where a partner earns their keep.
AI output should be reviewed before it influences anything that affects a person's livelihood, pay, discipline, performance ratings, promotions, or employment decisions. Agentic Zia is a powerful assistant, not a decision-maker. Keep a human in the loop on anything consequential.
Permissions matter more than the AI itself. An assistant can only protect confidential HR data if the underlying roles, fields, files, and integration access are configured correctly. Get the RBAC (role-based access control) right first, then let Zia act only where you want it to. An agent with the wrong permissions is a data risk, not a productivity tool.
Configuring agentic Zia safely, wiring BYOK, designing the attrition signals, and setting RBAC so the agent acts only where it should, is exactly the kind of work we do. It sits alongside our broader AI automation services, applied to HR specifically.
